BERNICE Brown once worked for an insurance company in North Sydney but the nine-to-five grind made her miserable.
Following her heart, she returned home to the Illawarra where employment options were scarce and opportunity for advancement was rare. She spent days searching for jobs before finally joining 19 other teenagers on a project that could change her life.Yesterday, two new Green Corps teams were announced, each comprising 10 teenagers between the ages of 17 and 20 who will take on traineeships in conservation and land management. Now in its 13th year, the Green Corps is supported by Wollongong City Council, Access Community Group and Warrigal Employment. The trainees will spend six months working on two community projects. The first, Ngaraba-aan Education Walking Trail, aims to link all the significant indigenous and non-indigenous sites along Perkins Beach, Hill 60, Boilers Point, Coomaditchie Lagoon and MM Beach. The other project aims to revegetate Cringila rainforest.Illawarra-based Liberal Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, who launched the projects yesterday, said trainees would gain valuable skills and development opportunities.
